New CEO at Stack Overflow Marks Start of Sabbatical for Founder
Joel Spolsky, the co-founder and former CEO of Stack Overflow, has officially handed over the reins to new chief executive Prashanth Chandrasekar. Spolsky described the transition as empowering, stating: "It's really satisfying to realize that the best possible outcome for me is if he proves what a bad CEO I was by doing a much better job running the company."

Spolsky, who still attends weekly meetings and customer calls, now considers himself on an indefinite sabbatical — not retirement — and is focusing on his roles as chairman of three companies: Stack Overflow, Glitch, and HASH.
Glitch Sees Explosive Growth Under New Leadership
Fog Creek Software, originally founded by Spolsky, has been rebranded as Glitch under CEO Anil Dash. The platform, which Spolsky calls "the friendly community for building the web," has expanded to millions of apps and raised significant funding to accelerate growth.
Spolsky explained Glitch's mission: "In every era there has to be some kind of simplified programming environment for the quiet majority of developers who don't need fancy administration features for their code — they just want to write code and have it run." He emphasized that Glitch caters precisely to that audience.
HASH Unveils Open-Source Simulation Platform
Spolsky's third venture, HASH, has emerged from stealth mode with a public website detailing its platform. HASH is building an open-source tool for agent-based simulation, allowing organizations to model complex systems where individual behaviors aggregate into unpredictable outcomes.
Spolsky illustrated with a city planning example: simulating traffic to justify a new bus line. "You can, sort of, pretend that every bus takes 50 cars off the road, but that's not going to work unless you can find 50 commuters who will all decide to take your new bus line," he said. HASH enables testing millions of potential routes by simulating each agent's decision-making.
He noted that while computationally intensive, the approach works even without closed-form formulas — making it ideal for problems like epidemiology, economics, and urban planning.

Background
Spolsky, a longtime figure in software development, co-founded Stack Overflow in 2008 and has been a central voice in developer communities. He also created the popular blog Joel on Software. In recent months, he stepped back from day-to-day operations at Stack Overflow, name Chandrasekar as his successor.
Spolsky resides in Manhattan's "Naturally Occurring Retirement Community" (NORC), but insists his current pace matches any full-time executive. He remains chairman of all three companies and actively advises each.
What This Means
Spolsky's sabbatical signals a generational shift at Stack Overflow, a key resource for developers worldwide. With Chandrasekar at the helm, the company is expected to pivot toward new revenue streams and community engagement.
Glitch's growth and funding round underscore increasing demand for low-friction development environments. Its success could pressure traditional IDEs and hosting platforms to simplify their offerings.
HASH enters a competitive simulation software market, but its open-source model and agent-based focus could appeal to governments, researchers, and enterprises seeking transparent, customizable models. The platform's potential in areas like pandemic response and traffic management aligns with growing interest in data-driven policy.
Spolsky's continued involvement across these ventures ensures his influence in the tech industry remains strong, even as he claims to be "discovering just how little I knew about running medium-sized companies."
