Apple will officially introduce a new ‘Create a Pass’ feature in iOS 27, allowing users to generate custom digital passes directly within the Wallet app. The feature, first hinted at in April, is now confirmed by multiple sources familiar with the development, with Bloomberg providing additional details.
“This is a significant expansion of the Wallet ecosystem,” said John Doe, a mobile industry analyst at TechInsights. “It bridges the gap between physical tickets and digital convenience, putting the power in users’ hands.” The feature will be demonstrated at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
Background
Currently, the Wallet app only supports passes from approved partners or those with compatible barcodes. Many common items, such as gym membership cards, store loyalty cards, and event tickets from small venues, cannot be added natively.
The ‘Create a Pass’ option addresses this limitation by letting users scan a QR code on an existing ticket or pass, or manually create a custom pass without a barcode. This effectively turns the Wallet app into a universal digital wallet for nearly any physical card or ticket.
How It Works
Users will tap the ‘+’ button in the Wallet app and select ‘Create a Pass.’ If a QR code is present, scanning it automatically imports the data. For passes without a QR code, users can manually input details and customize the appearance.
Apple has designated three pass types with distinct colors: purple for events, blue for memberships, and orange for other types like gift cards or transportation passes. Users can customize images, colors, text, and layout on each pass, giving them full control over the digital representation.
What This Means
This feature democratizes access to the Wallet ecosystem, enabling small businesses, independent event organizers, and even individuals to create digital passes without needing Apple’s approval or technical integration. “It’s a win for consumers who want to digitize their entire card collection,” said Jane Smith, a user-experience researcher.
